Development and Validation of Psycho-Educational Counseling Intervention Program To Enhance Post-Abuse And Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Coping of Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse In Nigeria

INTRODUCTION

This is a prospective research for children who have survived an abuse and parental consent is required for participant in this study. The parents would be required to go through all necessary requirements and ask any question they might have before deciding whether or not to give their permission for their child to take part. If they decide to let their child be involved in this study, a they will sign a consent form to record your permission.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

To collect baseline information regarding psychological and social experiences of survivors of child abuse. This is with the hope of being able to develop a culturally relevant psycho-educational intervention counseling package to enhance post abuse coping of survivors.

WHAT THE CHILD WILL BE ASKED TO DO?

Children who participate in this study will be asked to answer some questions about her/his post-abuse feeling and experiences.

The interview will take approximately 10min and the child’s responses will be audio recorded

WHAT ARE THE RISKS INVOLVED IN THE STUDY?

 There are no foreseeable risks to participating in this study.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE BENEFITS OF THE STUDY?

The possible benefit of participation includes the fact that the child will be exposed to better post abuse coping strategies which will help her/him adjust to life better and move past her/his traumatic experiences.

DOES YOUR CHILD HAVE TO PARTICIPATE?

A child’s participation in this study is voluntary. The child has the right to decline from participating and free to withdraw from participation at any time. Withdrawal or refusing to participate will not attract any form of penalty.

WHAT IF A CHILD DOES NOT WANT TO PARTICIPATE?

In addition to your permission, we want to reiterate that the child must agree to participate in the study. If he/she does not want to participate they will not be included in the study and there will be no penalty. If the child initially agrees to be in the study and along the line changes their mind, they cannot and would not be penalized for doing so.

THE CHILD’S PRIVACY AND CONFIDENTIALITY

The child’s privacy and the confidentiality of her/his data will be protected; research records will not be released without your consent unless required by law or a court order. The data resulting from any child’s participation may be made available to other researchers in the future for research purposes. In these cases, the data will contain no identifying information that could associate it with any given child, or with any child’s participation in any study. The audio recordings will also be discarded one month after the interview.
